Kaito
KAITO is a Japanese male Vocaloid created by Crypton Future Media. He utilizes the older Vocaloid engine developed by YAMAHA. He claims the spot of the last vocal to be released for the Vocaloid engine. The voice was supplied by a Japanese male singer Fūga Naoto (風雅 なおと). The illustration was done by Takashi Kawasaki. The product's name was invited from the public, and "KAITO" was selected from among applicants, which was the idea of Shu-tP.[1][2]
Kaito's initial failure was one the main reasons why other male vocaloids have not been developed for a long time after his release. The male voicebanks had so little demand at that time. [6] However, later interest in Kaito arose and Kaito sold well enough to later claim the second best seller of the year in Nico Nico Market in 2008.[7] From 2009 up until late 2011, he was in the top 10 best selling software of Crypton Future Media often competing not only with Vocaloid 2 era voicebanks, but on occasion outselling them.
Crypton announced that Kaito's muffler in his silhouette version was going to be transparent. However, they have since reconsidered this due to the fan outcry. On February 17th, 2011, Crypton released a temporary silhouette of Kaito's Append. They said that it has not been decided whether he will have a transparent muffler or not. [11]
There is a Piapro demo song contest for Len's Power Append. The prize is a package present of information on KAITO Append dates and when it is commercialized. [12] According to the Piapro blog entry following the contest's results, the winners do not -- or do not just -- receive information on KAITO Append, they get to participate in the production of KAITO Append. It's been guessed they will be given a beta version to work with.
On the 13th April, 2011, it was confirmed 6 vocal expressions had been recorded, two of which were dropped and the remaining were being brought forward with one having reached a completed alpha stage already. The Character Vocal (Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin/Len and Megurine Luka) series Appends had been created from vocal performance of their voice providers. The new Kaito Appends were created by adding echo, force and tension to the samples.[13] Kaito's new Vivid, Solid~power voicebanks were recorded with new high tech microphones through a series of trial and error instead of the standard U87ai.[14] On the 11th of May 2011, Crypton went back to Yamaha to announce the current Kaito development, whose demos were at the time suspended, Crypton apologized for the slow development to their fanbase and enhancements to Kaito's Whisper Append were being made.[15]
On the 28 of May 2011, demos of Kaito Append Whisper and Power along with Miku English were posted on Nico Nico Douga. It was also confirmed that the order of progress was Meiko, Megurine Luka and then Kaito.[16] On the 3rd of June 2011 the demo からくり時計と恋の話 was released using an alpha version Kaito's soft Append. [17] Kaito's "soft" Append was considered by Crypton as Kaito's most natural vocal and was noted to require little tuning to make it sound good.[18] According to Crypton, lowering the gender factor on Kaito's Soft Append renders sounding like a female vocalist, which although was cute was considered a blunder on their part.[19] Kaito's Whisper voicebank went through many processes even before it was completed and adjustments were constantly being made to improve it.
According to a report, version of the software was using Vocaloid 2 software although the software will be released with Vocaloid 3.[20] Crypton also finished recording Kaito's vocals after work was previously suspended for an interval.[21] Crypton were in discussion with Fuuga, Kaito's provider on the image and vocal outputs.[22] A classic Kaito Vocaloid style recording had also completed recording, one which will sound close to the vocal tone of the original voicebank that users were familiar with.[23]
The first commerical usage of the Kaito Append was from the album "VOCALOID民族調曲集", which features Kaito Append singing the song "千年の独奏歌 (kaoling mix) / yanagi".[24] The VOCALO APPEND album later used beta voicebanks of Kaito's Normal, Soft, Whisper voicebanks, singing "Lost Destination" with Kagamine Len Append.[25]
The name of the package is confimed "V3 Kaito".
On the 14th October 2011, Crypton updated us on their twitter[26] about making Kaito capable to sing in English. Not long after, it was announced via Piapro[27] and Miku's FB that a surprise concerning Kaito will be revealed at the 2011 New York Anime Festival. There was a relationship between the two, because when the 16th of October came, the panel revealed a demo of Kaito Append's English VB. Footage of the demo was captured and uploaded onto YouTube:
It was later tweeted that English Kaito was in alpha stage and that it still needed brushing up on.[28] Crypton Future Media are currently looking for Japanese producers who can use English capable Vocaloids to work with.[29] Kaito himself is currently being compared to oversea male English Vocaloids.[30] The company is exchanging VSQ files with producers to see how the current English Vocaloids compare with Kaito.[31]
On 23rd of Feb it was announced that they were able to talk about the progress of both Japanese and Kaito voicebanks in production.[32] Several overseas producers were now taking part with Kaito's production.[33] Kaito's double vowel and vowel to vowel sounds had been adjusted after a report came back on him.[34] In early March 2012, Kenmochi Hideki was given the voicebank to make further adjustments to.[35]
Kaito's vocal engine was been updated several times. [44][45] He can utilize two kind of Vocaloid editors, VOCALOID 1.0 and VOCALOID 1.1, and they have different functions and features. There are many differences between ver 1.0 and 1.1, and they sound different even if they are edited in the same way. (Comparison of ver 1.0 and ver 1.1 without further editing Nico broadcast, Nicozon broadcast). The main differences are Singing Style and Portamento Timing. [46][47]
Is his upcoming software package, this will replace the original product and it will be retired from sale. He will have several voicebanks, users will not need the original vocaloid package. This originally was intended to be Vocaloid 2 release.
The story of the sudden change in opinion on him occurred on September 16th, 2007, when Tatsunami uploaded a parody of the song in Higurashi no naku koro ni, "A Request From Hatsune" onto NicoNicoDouga. During this time, Miku was extremely popular on NicoNicoDouga, yet almost nobody knew of Kaito let alone produced songs using him. The video begins with the words "please sometimes recall [KAITO]," as well as Miku saying "where are you and what are you doing now?" which is from the song Dear You.
A independant Vocaloid search on Nico Nico Douga revealed that most Vocaloids had less then 1,000 videos uploaded on Nico Nico Douga in between July 1 and December 15 2011. Kaito managed to make it into the top six of a few lists. Kaito was the 6th most popular Vocaloid in terms of uploads, recieving 1404 uploads. KAITO had the 6th highest number of views with 1561894 views and 118479 mylists. Kaito did not make the top 6 average list, however, he was the 3rd most popular Vocaloid based on the mean number of views, which is a more truer reflection of his popularity with 414 views and 19 mylists. [49]
History
Kaito was created as a counterpart of Meiko and developed together. One of the reasons why his name "KAITO" was selected was that it would be easy for non-Japanese speakers to pronounce, and that it looked fitting to the name "MEIKO" when they were put next to one another [3]. On 24th July, 2003, an CCCD album "HISTORY OF LOGIC SYSTEM", which included a song using Japanese vocaloids commercially for the first time, was released. It was a duet song of "Ano Subarashii Ai wo Mou Ichido (That Wonderful Love Once More)" and it was covered by prototype version of Meiko and Kaito before their release. Meiko was released 1 year after this and Kaito followed her 2 years later[4].- Nico broadcast 【VOCALOID遺産】あの素晴らしい愛をもう一度

The Vocaloid era LegacyEdit
At the time of his original sale, Vocaloid was not yet a well known product, and synthesizing software was only considered successful if it sold more than 1,000 units. However, Kaito managed to sell only 500 units—deeming him a commercial failure.[5] In contrast, his counterpart, Meiko, had sold 3,000 units in her first year.Kaito's initial failure was one the main reasons why other male vocaloids have not been developed for a long time after his release.
V3 UpdateEdit
A confirmation came that Yamaha were due to no longer support the Vocaloid engine Vocaloids as the software progressed onto Vocaloid 3.[8] Rather then leave this at that, Crypton announced on twitter that they are developing a new production of Kaito named "Kaito Append" which was being developed for Vocaloid 2. Recording of Naoto Fuuga's voice started on December 9, 2010. Several voicebanks of different expressions like the Appends have been produced for the product. There are four appends empirically under development; temporarily "Mellow", "Sweet", "Solid" and "Power". [9][10]Crypton announced that Kaito's muffler in his silhouette version was going to be transparent.
English VoicebankEdit
Crypton has reacted to the possibility of an English voicebank, however they have reported it as "complicated". Nevertheless, they are reported to be testing and will be releasing a Kaito Append song into America to see the reaction. They have noted that they feel females will sell better than male voicebanks. On the 14th October 2011, Crypton updated us on their twitter[26] about making Kaito capable to sing in English. Not long after, it was announced via Piapro[27] and Miku's FB that a surprise concerning Kaito will be revealed at the 2011 New York Anime Festival. MarketingEdit
Crypton did not set his character and profile except his package design, as well as Meiko, for not having a concept of giving a certain character to an synthesizer application software. [36][37] It was carried over to the following vocaloids to encourage creative activities by free individuals and expanding the characters based on each user's individual needs. [38][39][40]FigurinesEdit
Kaito has had a few figurines based on him. Despite being older then the CV series Vocaloids, Kaito's merchandise tends to sell particularly well. The Nendoroid Kaito figurine had a high demand, causing a second re-issue of the figurine.- For more Figurines see Template:Nav Figurines
Guest AppearancesEdit
In Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei Kaito look-a-likes are seen in the waiting queue during the auditions of the role of Meru Meru, however they do not have Kaito's known colours.[41][42]Birthday '12Edit

Strengths
Both Kaito and Meiko form the Vocaloid "series", following a different design intention to the series of Vocaloids that followed them by Crypton Future media. Kaito is the male designed to be the counterpart to Meiko within their series. Both Vocaloids are designed to be professional vocals for professional musicians. Since Fuuga Naoto's professional music style lay more in the Jazz area, Kaito's vocals lean towards this particular style of music because of it. However, before this was mentioned Kaito was already being used for many other genres such as R&B and pop, the style that he is best used for was considered pop ballads. Also, because Fuuga Naoto was a professional musician and vocal actor, Kaito's results were of a high quality. His overall vocals are of a slightly higher quality then Meiko's.Kaito's vocal engine was been updated several times. [46][47]
Weaknesses
To use his 1.0 version, users who are NOT using 1.1.2 version need to patch Vocaloid Ver1.1.2 update file for Kaito distributed on Crypton’s official page first before they use VOCALOID 1.0 editor. Without patching, a critical error will occur. [48]Vocaloid 3Edit

PopularityEdit
Kaito's raise to fame was only by fluke, Kaito was a commercial failure and few had any interest in him. Kaito is now amongst the most popular of the Vocaloids in both Japanese and Western fandoms, this despite that fact he is very dated in terms of engine and newer, better Vocaloids have been released. The story of the sudden change in opinion on him occurred on September 16th, 2007, when Tatsunami uploaded a parody of the song in Higurashi no naku koro ni, "A Request From Hatsune" onto NicoNicoDouga. TriviaEdit
- His age was never given officially. In Maker Hikōshiki Hatsune Mix he is usually portrayed as a middle aged man by KEI, however, what he depict in the comic is not official settings as he mentioned in a magazine interview.[50]
- Since Yamaha and Crypton printed different dates for Kaito's release (Yamaha; 14th, Crypton; 17th), some fans within the Japanese Vocaloid community celebrate Kaito's release date anniversary during all days between the different dates.
- When it came to the Kaito update, the voicebanks went under much experimenting throughout the developing process. This was because although Crypton were veterans at producing Vocaloid voicebanks, they did not have so much experience with masculine toned vocals such as Fuuga Naoto's. This was due to the fact all of their other Vocaloids intended for the consumer market had come from female vocalists.
- Because of the story of his rediscovery in 2008, Kaito was often depicted with ice cream. This gave birth to the "Item War" Internet Meme tradition.
Notable for...Edit
- Was used in the oldest known Vocaloid related song ever released
- First Japanese male vocal ever released
- Only Vocaloid voicebank announced as a failure
- Subject to a sudden opinion change around
- Most popular Vocaloid voicebank
- Last Vocaloid voicebank produced

Paul Shinji
Paul (Japanese: シンジ Shinji) is a rival of Ash in the anime. He is from Veilstone City in Sinnoh. He was first seen at the end of Two Degrees of Separation, though his full introduction was in When Pokémon Worlds Collide!. He is Ash's first and main Diamond & Pearl series rival.
At the beginning it was assumed that Paul was a Trainer just starting out. However this was proven false in Top-Down Training where he revealed that he had already traveled through Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn, participating in their respective Leagues but didn't win anything before returning to Sinnoh. In A Pyramiding Rage!, it was revealed that Kanto was the very first region he traveled through.
A Pyramiding Rage! revealed much about Paul's motivation as a Pokémon Trainer and more about his character. When Reggie was a roaming Pokémon Trainer, he had lost to Brandon. Reggie's loss to Brandon is what caused Paul to be so adamant about strength in battle. This single loss is also what caused Paul to become the callous person he was, and that was because of how his brother handled the loss. Instead of bearing the shame of his loss to Brandon, Reggie moved on with his life and put the loss behind him. Paul found this to be unacceptable, and he became disappointed of his brother. He challenged Brandon to a full battle in hopes that he would be able to do what his brother never could. However, Paul lost to Brandon without being able to knock out any of Brandon's Pokémon. Brandon says that this loss was because Paul was unable to control his emotions.
Following Reggie's suggestion in A Pyramiding Rage!, Paul battled Ash in a full battle in Pedal to the Mettle! and Evolving Strategies!. Here, he shows his true colors in battle and, despite Ash's Chimchar evolving into Monferno and three of Ash's Pokémon using the Counter Shield strategy, Paul won the match easily with only at a loss of two Pokémon overall, where one defeated half of Ash's team nearly single-handedly. He had his Pokémon use a broad variety of strategies, which he kept up his sleeve until this battle, such as tempting Ash to send his Staraptor up against his Torterra so he could attack it with Stone Edge, Electabuzz using Light Screen to aid its comrades, using his Ursaring against Ash's Pikachu so as to activate its Guts ability, and his Magmortar using Rock Tomb to protect itself against Water-type attacks. As a result, his strategy of completely overwhelming and outsmarting Ash with his more powerful Pokémon team succeeded.
In Double-Time Battle Training!, it was revealed that Paul had earned the Mine Badge from Canalave Gym and, by doing so, had collected the eight badges he required to enter the Sinnoh League.
Paul reappeared in Fighting Ire with Fire!, encountering Ash for the first time since their full battle. He also met his admirer Barry for the first time; however, Paul wasn't impressed by him and refused his offer for a battle, suggesting he battle Ash instead. He later watched the battle between Ash's Monferno and Barry's Empoleon and when Pikachu, Piplup and Empoleon were nearly crushed by one of Team Rocket's damaged mechas, he saved the three with the help of his Electabuzz. He then witnessed Monferno evolving into Infernape, who then saved Electabuzz and the other Pokémon from getting crushed. Paul was impressed by Infernape, and gained a little respect for Ash at how well he had raised it. When asked by Ash if they could have another full battle, Paul confirmed they would in the Sinnoh League, and that Reggie was looking forward to seeing it.
In An Old Family Blend!, he was shown in the stadium along with all the other competitors. In League Unleashed!, he passed the preliminary round. In Casting a Paul on Barry!, with his superior tactics and the superior power of his Pokémon, he defeated Barry in the third round. His next battle was against his rival Ash in Familiarity Breeds Strategy!, continuing into A Real Rival Rouser! and Battling a Thaw in Relations!. After a fierce battle, Paul was finally defeated, and he and Ash parted on good terms, Ash having earned Paul's respect. It also seems Paul may have decided to change somewhat, as when Electivire is defeated, he thanks it for a job well done, something that, up until that point, Paul never did, even if his Pokémon won. Afterwards, Paul states that his next intention is to return to Snowpoint City and re-challenge Brandon. He briefly appears in The Semi-Final Frontier!, seeing Ash lose to Tobias.
Paul makes a cameo appearance during the credits of Zoroark: Master of Illusions, where he is seen visiting a ruin with statues of Dialga and Palkia.
Sometimes, he gives some of his Pokémon to his brother, Reggie, for temporary training and caretaking, as revealed in Lost Leader Strategy!. Paul also disagrees with his brother for giving up on being a Pokémon Trainer after failing to get the Brave Symbol. He feels his brother's approach and view on this to be wrong. Reggie cares about his brother and ultimately loves him as brother but has no illusions about Paul's character. He openly admits sadly that Paul has always had a cruel streak.
Paul feels that Ash is a weak Trainer and can easily bring on Ash's anger by stating it. Ash's very different attitude towards being friends with Pokémon also provides much fuel to their rivalry. Out of all the rivals that Ash has, Paul seems to be the most harsh towards him and his Pokémon. Despite that, Paul barely recognizes their rivalry and Ash as a Trainer and ignores Ash's speeches about loving his Pokémon. Ash on the other hand has a hatred of Paul that flares up at Paul's indifference to his Pokémon. However Ash accepts that Paul is a strong Trainer but considers himself on the same par as him. Paul's first hint of respect for Ash was in A Pyramiding Rage! when he was very surprised to hear that Ash had beaten Brandon in a Pokémon battle.
Although Paul finds most of Ash's Pokémon weak (the ones he has actually met), he has shown a particular interest in his Pikachu, as shown in A Gruff Act To Follow!, after Pikachu used Thunderbolt on Roark's Cranidos. Paul is also angered by how Ash "contradicts" himself by criticizing Paul's training methods and then uses similar ones, such as entering the Wallace Cup, despite Ash's motivations being clearly different than Paul's.
Paul appears to feel indifference to Dawn, showing that he didn't even bother to remember her name in A Gruff Act to Follow. However he talks to her about Ash in Familiarity Breeds Strategy!. Paul confesses his main problem with Ash... his talk about bringing out a Pokémon's inner strength and how any Pokémon has the potential to be strong reminds him a lot of Reggie. Paul shows mild respect as well as distaste towards Brock, probably because Brock supports Ash's view on Pokémon. Paul does show respect for his elders, such as Professor Rowan, Cynthia, Nurse Joy and Brandon. However it should be noted that keeping with his views of strong Pokémon and strong trainers that he only respects actual trainers with strong Pokémon i.e. While he respects Professor Rowan and Nurse Joy for their wisdom and positions, he only respects Cynthia and Brandon for their abilities as trainers. He is shown to have no respect for Gym Leaders who he feels are weak. While he was shown to respect Roark who he judged to be in the end a worthy opponent, he was openly rude and mean to Maylene who he was able to defeat with relative ease, only requiring 2 Pokémon (his Honchkrow and Magmar) against her 3 (Maylene's Meditite, Machoke and Lucario).
Paul was impressed by Infernape, and gained a little (little more, if one is to say his first display of respect was hearing that Ash beat the entire Battle Frontier) respect for Ash at how well he had raised it. When asked by Ash if they could have another full battle, Paul confirmed they would in the Sinnoh League and that Reggie was looking forward to seeing it.
After a fierce battle in the Sinnoh League Tournament, Paul was finally defeated and he and Ash parted on good terms, Ash having earned Paul's respect.
Personality and training
Paul's only concern in his Pokémon is of their strength in battle. He strongly dislikes weak Pokémon and has a habit of releasing them if they do not meet his high expectations. To this effect, Paul always checks new captures with his Pokédex to learn what moves they know and trains the Pokémon he keeps harshly to make them strong. He feels that bonding with Pokémon would only turn them into slackers. He also has a habit of scolding his Pokémon for losing to opponents he feels they could have beaten, and this was a recurring trait when he owned Chimchar. As a person, he is very callous at times and even brutal, especially in battle and as a result, he has been shown to display very little emotion other than an occasional rough smile.Sometimes, he gives some of his Pokémon to his brother, Reggie, for temporary training and caretaking, as revealed in Lost Leader Strategy!. Paul also disagrees with his brother for giving up on being a Pokémon Trainer after failing to get the Brave Symbol. He feels his brother's approach and view on this to be wrong. Pokémon
As a result of Paul's selective team creation, his active team is composed of Pokémon that he deems to be powerful. Whilst the captures of Ursaring and Gliscor were shown in Different Strokes for Different Blokes and Riding the Winds of Change! respectively, and Ninjask's was revealed in a flashback during Glory Blaze!, his team has for the most part been captured off-screen. Several other Pokémon in his possession were captured on screen but later released. This listing is of Paul's Pokémon as of the most recent Japanese episode and the ones used for the last full battle against Ash:

Paul's Aggron first appeared as a Lairon in A Pyramiding Rage!, where it fought against Brandon's Regice. Despite having a significant type advantage, it lost in a matter of seconds after only managing to use Iron Defense; Regice froze it solid with Ice Beam and then knocked it out with a single Zap Cannon. In Familiarity Breeds Strategy! it was shown that Lairon had evolved into an Aggron and battled against Ash's Pikachu in the Lily of the Valley Conference. It managed to give Pikachu problems, but was eventually defeated by Ash's Infernape. It was the first Pokémon used by Paul in the Conference. It was one of the two Pokémon used by Paul to uncover Ash's strategy, the other being Gastrodon. Aggron's known moves are Iron Defense, Metal Claw, Metal Sound, Flash Cannon and Double-Edge, and its ability is Rock Head.

Paul's Drapion first made its appearance in Familiarity Breeds Strategy!, where it battled against Ash's Buizel. Despite Buizel's efforts, using his Counter Shield, Drapion was able to defeat him in A Real Rival Rouser! with a combination of Pin Missile and Toxic Spikes. Drapion next battled Ash's Staraptor. It managed to dodge all of Staraptor's moves and used Pin Missile which threw Staraptor to the ground and caused it to get knocked out by Toxic Spikes. It then went up against Ash's Torterra, who felt the effect of Toxic Spikes upon being release from its Poké Ball. Torterra did manage to plant a few hits on Drapion but it regained the upper-hand after using Poison Fang. Torterra tried to recover with its Synthesis but was knocked out after being hit by Pin Missile. Paul then recalled Drapion after its third victory. Later, Drapion was used to battle Ash's Gliscor. Unlike before, Gliscor proved too quick for Drapion to keep up with and it managed to attack with Giga Impact before Drapion could make a move. Still it put up a fight with Pin Missile. In the end, it was knocked out after being burned from Gliscor's Fire Fang in Battling a Thaw in Relations!. It was the third Pokémon called out by Paul in the battle, and the only one that was recalled by him during the entire battle. Drapion's known moves are Pin Missile, Cross Poison, Toxic Spikes, and Poison Fang.

It fought hard against Gliscor but was eventually defeated after a hard battle with Infernape. It was the fourth Pokémon used by Paul. Ninjask's known moves are Agility, Fury Cutter, and Giga Drain, and its Ability is Speed Boost.

Eventually, Pikachu was able to get the upper hand and defeated Froslass with Iron Tail and Volt Tackle. She was the fifth Pokémon used by Paul in the battle. With Reggie
In Veilstone City, Reggie told Ash that Paul's "other Pokémon are here too" which may include his reserves. In Glory Blaze!, Paul mentions that he wanted Chimchar to become the most powerful out of all his Fire-type Pokémon. This could mean he has other Fire-type Pokémon besides Magmortar.

Weavile made its first appearance in Top-Down Training!. It was used in a battle against Cynthia's Garchomp. Despite having a type-advantage, Weavile lost easily to Garchomp. It was also revealed in this episode that Paul caught Weavile while journeying through Hoenn, Johto and Kanto. It was not seen again until Riding the Winds of Change! where Paul used it and Electabuzz to capture Gliscor, and again until Aiding the Enemy, where it was seen training with Torterra. It appeared again in Pedal to the Mettle!, where it was one of the battlers in Ash and Paul's full battle. It lost to Ash's Staraptor, despite the type-advantage. It appeared again in Battling a Thaw in Relations! at Reggie's house, where it, along with Paul's Torterra, Ursaring and Honchkrow, was unhappy to find out Paul had lost. Weavile's known moves are Blizzard, Ice Beam, Ice Shard, Swords Dance and Metal Claw.

Gliscor first appeared in Riding the Winds of Change! where it had become trapped in a city after being blown there by a violent windstorm. Gliscor's attempts at using sonar to navigate out of the city were blocked by the tall buildings, and only served to attract more Gligar and the Pokémon soon formed a pack. Seeing as it was a powerful Pokémon, Paul battled Gliscor with his Electabuzz and Weavile and captured it. Gliscor appeared again in Chim - Charred! where it was used to battle Ash's Gligar. It won the battle easily, crushing Gligar's neck by using a very strong Guillotine. It made a brief appearance in Aiding the Enemy alongside with other Paul's Pokémon out of the Pokémon Center while the Team Rocket trio took care of Paul's Torterra. Gliscor has not been seen since. Gliscor's known moves are X-Scissor, Sandstorm, Knock Off, and Guillotine.

Paul's Hariyama has only appeared in A Pyramiding Rage!. It fought against Brandon's Regirock, with Paul bringing it out to utilise its type advantage. It appeared to be very powerful, managing to block Regirock's otherwise deadly Stone Edge with its hands and strike with multiple Arm Thrusts. However, it was caught at close range, stunned with Shock Wave and flattened by a strong Focus Punch. Hariyama's known moves are Arm Thrust and Force Palm.

Paul's Nidoking has only appeared in A Pyramiding Rage!. He fought against Brandon's Registeel. Nidoking also proved to be powerful, surprising even Brandon with his ability to recover so quickly from a Flash Cannon to the face. It hit Registeel directly with all of his attacks, but the Drill Pokémon didn't manage to cause much damage to the Iron Pokémon and was defeated with a powerful Iron Head. Nidoking's known moves are Earth Power, Double Kick, and Thunderbolt.

Paul caught Azumarill for his battle with Roark in Shapes of Things to Come, attempting to use the type advantage over the Rock-type Pokémon. However, Roark's Geodude had little trouble in defeating the Water Pokémon, deflecting Hydro Pump with Hidden Power and knocking it out with Rollout. Paul cursed Azumarill's weakness and went on to win the battle with Elekid and Chimchar. After such a loss, Paul gave Azumarill away to a little boy during A Gruff Act to Follow, claiming it had no potential to improve and there was no point wasting his time on it. This infuriated Ash and set their rivalry in stone. Azumarill's known moves are Hydro Pump and Water Gun.
